Rat culling is a technique used by breeders to make sure only the rats with desired traits breed. Breeders that want healthy rats monitor all of their rats, and any that are blind, deaf, or always sick are 'culled,' which is a nice way to say 'killed so they won't breed.'

If unhealthy rats are allowed to breed, their babies will be unhealthy too, sometimes sicker than their parents, and all of the breeder's rats will eventually become blind, deaf or sick, so they are culled before this can happen. This is very harsh and unfair to the unhealthy rats, as they could be spayed or easily kept separate and live out a happy life without reproducing, but some breeders don't want to waste food, time and care on rats that will not be bred.
