I used to work in the call center for a national computer repair company and it seemed to me that over 80% of our customers had Dells & Gateways. Now I don't know if that was because they sold the most laptops or if they just needed the most repairing. I do know though Dell is good for price. You can but the most basic Inspiron for under $400.
My son has an Acer Aspire 5200 running Windows7. The very first thing I noticed is that this model doesn't have a webcam, and the sound is terrible and there is no volume control. You have to control the sound thru the CTRL + arrow keys.
Personally I have a Toshiba Satellite L305D. I bought it in Jun 2009 for $480 and have been very happy with it ever since. It's got a 2.2ghz AMD processor (I prefer AMD as they run cooler compared to the Intel) 250gb hard drive, 3gb Ram. The keyboard is comfortable, display is bright & sharp, and the 5:1 surround sound is very clear/crisp. The case is sturdy and durable. Me? - I'd check out a Toshiba or an HP. They're both very dependable and make very good laptops.
