Drawing software for modern computers supports built-in tools to draw simple geometric shapes such as straight or curved lines, rectangles, circles, etc. Drawing those is a process of selecting the tool, the brush (color, size, line style, etc), then selecting the pivotal point (typically the center of the shape or the start of the line), and finally determining its size or length.

These selections can be made with almost any input device designed for human interaction: the keyboard, a mouse, voice control, touch (as with tablet computers' touch screens), etc.

Arguably the best input device for use with drawing software and similar applications is the graphics tablet, but these are fairly expensive and not needed for drawing simple shapes or lines.
