There is no real answer to that. It depends on what it is that you are trying to do. Each application is suited to different types of jobs. However the majority of things that people want to do in a spreadsheet or a word processor or a database, could be done just as well in older versions than in the newer versions. For example, you can type an ordinary letter in the first version of Word just as well as you can in the newer versions. All the fundamentals of each application have always been available. New versions have more extras in them, but a lot of them people would rarely use anyway, which is why an older versions will do all of the standard things they need to do.
