The pack command's algorithm uses Huffman encoding to compress files.
This algorithm has fundamental limitations. Consequently, the pack command
can only consistently compress files under 8MB. To consistently compress
files larger than 8MB, use the compress command.
A tight pack is were they are on there side and a loose pack is where they are not on there side. :)

From the Whirlpool site it looks like the only difference is that the p suffix refers to a pack of 2. There is a T suffix also which refers to a triple pack.
