In my perspective, I don't really think there is a difference. Icon is the little picture thingys you find out the desktop. When you click shortcut for something, it will appear the same as an icon on the desktop. So I don't really think there's a difference.
You may be referring to a path or shortcut icon on the desktop that points to a specific file or program.
It's usually a shortcut to a program or file. Instead of hunting through folders for specific (frequently used) files or programs, you can place a shortcut icon on the desktop.

If you are trying to create a desktop shortcut of a program you have installed:1. Find the program that you want to create the shortcut for.2. Right click the icon and hover over: 'send to'3. If you right click on your desktop and go down to new and click on shortcut then go to browse and find what you what for an icon in your screen, you click okay then next then finish you have the icon on your desktop.
First create a shortcut of the program on your Desktop. (Right click on the program icon and navigate to Send to > Desktop) Now go to the Desktop and simply drag the shortcut to the Task Bar.
It is just the calculator application it is not a bug or a glitch, if you want to get rid of it delete the shortcut
Right click on desktop>>New>>Shortcut Enter the websites URL in Type the location of the item box Then write the name of the shortcut you created. Click OK Shortcut will be created. Enjoy :-)
