There are many easy ways to upgrade a computer. A person can install more memory cards to help the computers performance. Also, clearing history and deleting any unneeded files will help speed up a computers performance.

It depends on what is slowing your computer the most.

If you are constantly running low on RAM, you could add more memory. If you have to change it all because the sockets are full, then preferably replace it with faster, lower latency RAM.

If you can get a good deal on a faster CPU which is compatible with your motherboard, you could change that.

The hard drive is another area to upgrade. If you can find a faster hard drive, then you can transfer your data to a faster hard drive. Or, you might want to try one of several compromises. There are such things as caching-only SSD hard drives. All you have to do is physically install and cable them and then install a driver. Or, you could install a small SSD drive, move the OS to it, and use the old drive for data storage, downloads, temp files, etc.

Of course, you might be able to address a few oversights without spending much or even any money. For instance, some people may have a hyperthreading CPU and not have hyperthreading enabled in CMOS. Some may have a UDMA PATA hard drive and not have that setting turned on in Windows (or a registry file error keeping the UDMA modes from being enabled). Some may have installed or repartitioned certain modern hard drives without running alignment software.

Also, you should scan for viruses and spyware. A lot of times, people have malware for so long in their computers that they think it is time to upgrade.
