This is a reflection of my favorite Marcel Proust quote: "The real voyage of discover consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes." Nothing in existence has inherent meaning. That's why we all have differing opinions of almost everything. The meaning anything has to us individually is the meaning we ascribe to it based upon our likes, dislikes, experiences, prejudices, values, and level of knowledge. Once we assign a meaning to something we end our relationship with that "thing/person/situation" and begin to relate to and interact with our own beliefs. We become blind to the fact that we no longer "see" what's before us. We only see our thoughts. When an ah-ha moment strikes, a small opening in our belief system allows a new way to see and think of something enter. Now, instead of relating only to our own thoughts of something, we begin to actually experience that something in real time. The present moment has over-ridden the past. This moment is like looking at the same scenery through a different set of prescription lenses. Nothing out there may have changed at all, but we are now more capable of letting perceptions enter that were blocked before. The real question is, can you intentionally change the way you see things or is this a moment of grace over which we have no control? I believe we can be more available to a shift in perspective if we acknowledge that the way we see things is only one of six billion perspectives on the face of the planet. Ours is no more right or wrong that anyone elses. It's just ours. Being open to being influenced means you are more present with what's happening now; that you hold your personal beliefs with a soft grip and invite new views and information to be considered. You listen more and convince less. You are curious. For a true revolution to take place within one's life, it is futile and frustrating to continually try to make the world conform to one's views. But, in the instant we open ourselves up to this moment, the whole world can change right before our eyes. Karen Wright; karen@wrightminded.com; www.wrightminded.com
