Currently USB Ports are by far the most popular for connecting standard desktop I/O devices such as hard drives or CD-ROM Drives or Thumb drives.

However eSATA and Firewire are used as well to a lesser extent.

1. USB (Universal Serial Bus). Like its name implies, it is used almost universally when there is any sort of data transfer: it is used for everything from mice and keyboards to webcams and portable hard drives. The bus (the mode of transport for the port) transmits data serially, which means it transmits data using staggered impulses along a few wires (as opposed to parallel data transfer, which sends bits of data parallel to each other along 40 wires or more). USB was created by the a group of companies, which consisted of Intel, Compaq, Microsoft, Digital, IBM, and Northern Telecom.
2. TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve) connector. This are used to send analog information(which is expressed in the form of waves, as opposed to digital information) to the devices attached to it. These are commonly 1/8-inch wide at their base, and are used most commonly in the transmission of audio signals. When used for such a purpose, these wires connect speakers and microphones to computers for home use (professionals use the less degradable 1/4-inch jacks). They utilize multiple rings of conductors to achieve multiple channels of audio, like stereo speaker output while having a mono microphone input.
3. Video output ports. These connect the computer's monitor, or screen, with its graphics card, or GPU. There are four commonly used ports at the time of this writing. These are:
   1. VGA (Video Graphics Array). In use since the 1980's this analog form of transfer is slowly becoming obsolete in the wake of newer, digital forms of video transfer. To use this, GPUs had to convert the signal from digital (their native format) to analog, which was sent to the analog CRT (Cathode Ray Tube--basically, an old tube TV) monitor of that time. But with the advent of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and LED (Light Emitting Diode) monitors, both of which use digital outputting formats, it is now simpler to keep the signal a digital one, and not risk any data loss. This is the only one of the four video ports that use an exclusively analog signal.
   2. DVI (Digital Video Interface). Designed to be able to output either analog or digital, this port was the first step towards an entirely digital output system. Allowing backwards compatibility with VGA output devices, the interoperability of this port caused it to quickly rise in popularity, and it paved the way for HDMI.
   3. HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface). This is an entirely digital form of input/output, allowing both video and audio to be transferred through the same cable, as opposed to the previous two ports, which require a separate audio jack. Most commonly used in HDTV's (High Definition TeleVision), and required for Blu-RayTM video playback, this is the current standard for video display devices at the time of this writing.
   4. DisplayPortTM. This is the most recent standard for sending video information. Designed to be backwards compatible with the other forms of output, it is nevertheless intended to replace them. Commonly used for video and audio output, it is also designed to transmit other data, such as for use in file transfer. The makers of this standard are hoping to have one type of cord be all you need to transfer data to and from other devices. However, at the time of this writing this is a new standard, and has not received widespread popularity, despite its being a freely available standard.
4. Ethernet. This cable is used for the transfer of serial data between modem (used for internet connection) and computer. Essentially every computer connecting to the Internet will send or receive a signal that has been through an Ethernet cable. Devices using this break up the transferred data into individual frames of information. Each frame is then individually checked, allowing minimal (if any) data corruption.
