I'm not sure what the most recent method is, but most computers use heat sinks and cooling fans to keep them cool however there are other methods such as liquid cooling, complete submersion in mineral oil, and even liquid nitrogen cooling. Extreme methods, such as liquid nitrogen, are usually used when overclocking a computer.

On my 1997 maxima I had to replace it and found it in the air intake to the fan. this was under the dash. Its on a PC board and the air passing overit keeps it cool. Bob.
