Pressing the Delete key will get rid of the content, though not the cell itself. If you want to get rid of the cell itself, then select it, right click on it and pick the Delete option from the shortcut menu. You can then choose how you want the cell to be removed, either moving the cells below it up, or moving the cells to the right back one cell to replace the deleted one.
