i am assuming that you know what a firewire is. not all computers come with a firewire input. if your computer doesn't have a firewire IN. then you have to buy a card, which gives you the acessability to plug a firewire cable into your computer.
a 1934 port is actually a firewire port, that can be used for high speed data transfers
If the computer is able to accept PCI cards you will need to add a FireWire card to the computer and connect the camera to that. (See links below)
To connect a Canon ZR40 to a computer, use a FireWire (IEEE 1394) cable to connect the camcorder's DV output to the FireWire port on your computer. If your computer lacks a FireWire port, you may need a FireWire to USB adapter or a compatible capture card. Once connected, turn on the camcorder and set it to the playback mode. You can then use video editing software to capture or transfer the footage from the camcorder to your computer.

The IEEE 1394 is similar to a USB device, it can be plugged into the port on the computer or device, mostly to import audio or video files. The IEEE 1394 port is called a firewire. An external scanner or disk drive may also have a firewire port.
The IEEE 1394 Interface or Port is also know by it's Apple Mac name as FireWire.
firewire port can support up to 63 devices on one firewire port with a hub
No. USB is most popular.
Apple's FireWire (IEEE 1394 interface) was first introduced in 1995.
Most these days will use some kind of USB Interface to connect to a computer for data sharing. Firewire was popular in the the past but has faded from use in recent years.
