Your computer was shutdown most likely due to overheating which is what caused a 'thermal event'. You are most likely at startup where if you press F1 it continues doing what it was doing before it paused to show you the message, which is shutting down. If you are on a desktop it is likely that your processor fan is clogged and has stopped cooling the CPU. I can assure you from experience that you don't want to continue using the computer if that is the case. A cheap new fan for the CPU cooler is the best solution, as compared to new motherboard, CPU, and memory if you don't replace it. If you are experienced enough you can clean the old fan usually to get some more life out of it but i wouldn't recommend it. If you are on a laptop then sometimes they will overheat after long periods of use without a laptop cooling desk to set on. Buy a good quality laptop cooler desk.
