  • A cage that they rat can't escape from - make sure wire cages have the wire close enough together that the rat can't squeeze out. If it can get its head through, it can escape.
  • A water bottle
  • A food dish - feed a commercial rat diet and fruits, veggies and treats
  • Bedding - this can be paper shreds, commercial bedding, old blanket scraps, etc. They like to have an old cardboard box or even a "rat cube" made from material to curl up in to sleep. They also like hammocks.
  • Litter - you can do litter across the entire bottom of the cage or you can try a litter pan but most likely the rat will not "use" the litter pan so covering the entire cage floor is recommended.
  • Toys - rats get bored and will play with toys to entertain themselves.

Speaking of treats, I had a pet rat that enjoyed cat food.
