Need more information. Is this a home network? Office building? Campus wide?

If you are running Windows, you have everything you need to connect and use a Local Area Network (LAN). If you are attempting to set up a server to administer your LAN, you can still use Windows.

I'm assuming you are hooking up a home network and will tell you that you don't need anything other than a router and your current operating system (OS) which is probably a version of Windows.

Just do some reading online or via Windows help and you can figure out what you need to do to get it up and working. Don't forget to make it secure if you are using a WiFi router (wireless/wired).

Does PDA's generally include network operating system?

A PDA would only include NOS components if they were designed to work on a network, particularly wireless networks. The more inexpensive PDAs do not do that, and have no network software. The higher end PDAs will have the required software in order to connect to a network.

Three types of software?

I have never heard that software has only three main types, but I would have to declare that the main divisions are: 1) System Software ( the code that boots the computer and controls the devices, resources and applications). Everyday folks know this as Windows, Mac, Linux, Unix, etc. This is typically read from disk and loaded into RAM, although it could also be manifested as PROM, in which case it is read from non-volatile memory. 2) Network Software - This would include the OSI network stack that would be loaded AFTER the System Software. This constitutes industry standard network protocols such as TCP/IP that enables communication of the System Software to other computer over a network. The World Wide Web is the most used clent of network software that is built upon the OSI stack. SUN Microsytems advertisements stated that "The NETWORK" was the computer. They were ahead of their time. 3) Application Software. This is software that can be written for a platform such as Windows, or in todays world, a web-based application that uses the Network and System software noted above. Apps-a-million is all I can say. Some are brilliant, and the rest are aborted works in progress.

Can you Connect a DOS 6.22 Workstation to server 2003 over the internet?

Standard DOS does not have any networking software, so by itself there is no way to connect to a network, let alone a server 2003 system. You would have to buy networking software that runs under DOS to get to the network.
