There are several ways in which to make computing more environmentally friendly.

First of all, use only EnergyStar and RoHS compliant hardware. EnergyStar is a certification given to electronic hardware that is energy efficient. RoHS is a certification given to hardware that contains a minimal level of toxic chemicals such as Mercury, lead, cadmium, etc.

Second of all, recycle your old hardware. Companies like Dell, HP, Apple, IBM, etc all offer recycling programs. If the computers still work, try to sell them second hand to people who need a computer but can't afford a new system.

Thirdly, know the lingo. CPU (Central Processing Unit), aka the processor, has voltage ratings. This information is easily accessed using Intel and AMD's websites. The lower voltage used, the less power needed to perform processing tasks. Other parts of the computer also have voltage and power usage ratings, so be sure to check up on those as well. Power supplies have a special certication available as well, called '80 Plus'. An '80 Plus Certified' power supply is a power supply that uses 80% or more of the power towards the components of the PC rather than cooling of the power supply itself.

Following those and turning the pc's off when not getting used will significantly reduce the amount of power usage and extend the life of the computers, making them much more green.
