Hard drive size is measured in bytes. Average sizes for hard drives these days are in the gigabytes (billions of bytes). A gigabyte is a thousand megabytes which is a thousand kilobytes which is a thousand bytes.

Hard-drives are measured in multiples of 1000 bytes. Although memory is usually measured in exact multiple of 1,024 bytes (such as 210, 220, 230 bytes and so on), hard-drive capacities cannot be determined so accurately. This is primarily because additional storage is required for parity and synchronising bits, so even if the capacity really is an exact multiple of 1,024 bytes, the actual capacity for storage will be a good deal less. For this reason, hard-drive manufacturers prefer to use multiples of 1,000 bytes.

Thus a hard drive that claims to be 1TB (terabyte) does not have the full capacity of 1,099,511,627,776 bytes that it should have, it only has capacity for 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is closer to 930GB. While it is clearly misleading, most people accept the fact a 1TB drive only allows storage for a trillion bytes, rather than the full terabyte.
