Windows 7:

1. Click on the start button click computer

2. Once your on the document screen named computer click the hard drive to De fragment.

3. Right click the icon and click properties once there click the tab called Tools

4. Click "De Fragment Now"

Windows XP:

1. Click the start button, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
2. Click the volume that you want to defragment.
3. Click De-fragment to begin the DeFragment.

A good defragmentation utility can speed up access time by moving all parts of a file to contiguous blocks and sectors.

Note: this is only true for spinning hard drives; solid-state hard drives do not benefit particularly from defragmentation - especially since wear leveling and trimming move the files around anyway and allocate the SSD memory accordingly.
