Is an external excel spreadsheet linked into a word document considered a compoound document in the microsoft enviroment?
No. A docx file is a Word document and a xlsx file is an Excel document. It is possible to copy data from one to the other, like copying a table from Word into Excel, but the files as a whole cannot be understood by the other application.
OLE stands for Object Linking and Embedding. It is a process that Microsoft developed to allow you to embed and link document and other objects. It allows you to create a document in an application designed to create a specific object, such as a chart from PowerPoint, and embed that object in another application, such as Excel.

You do not, unless you have Acrobat or some other software that can edit PDF files. An acrobat PDF file is basically a picture of the document. If you can edit the file, sometimes you can SaveAs, but if all you have is a PDF file and MS Excel, you will not be able to convert to a worksheet. You do a standard copy and paste. If you paste a link, then it will change in the Word or Excel document when you change the other document. If you do not paste a link, then there is no ongoing connection to the original source and so changing the data in Word has no effect on the source.

For a standard Excel document, prior to Excel 2007, it is xls and xlsx is used in 2007. There are other kinds of files created by Excel, like templates which can be xlt or macros which can be xlm and xla for Add-ins, and there are other extenions. For 2007, you add x to the end of them.
