Generally its not recommended that you leave anything you might need late un-backed up.

The main reason behind the back-up is like the "safe" idea you just keep a duplicate of what you already have on another drive or hard disk so that if any kind of loss happens (ex: virus attacks your PC or even losing your whole laptop) you wouldn't lose your data & files.

Unnecessary data & files can be left out or things that you know you can get them back in a way or another if you didn't store them yourself. (ex: studying material if they can be downloaded or you can get them from a friend)
