Apples first operating system was Apple DOS 3.1 for the Apple II in 1978. Versions 1 and 2 were internal testing versions and were not made available to the public. They developed Apple SOS (Sophisticated Operating System) for the Apple III in 1980. Parts of the SOS were used in the Lisa's operating system which in turn would lead to the Macintosh Operating System.
The first operating system for the Macintosh came out in 1984, with the release of the first Macintosh. This was known as "System 1.0". The current series of system software, Mac OS X, was released in 1999 for servers, and 2001 for desktops.
