circa 1979, i sold and installed a :KINGTRON ; cash reg. which had a separate scanner. a rotating set of mirrors directed a laser beam which read the upc code printed on the item being scaned.what most people didn,t realize was, each item in the store had to be scaned and then the discription entered to match the code. later the wholesale groc warehouse downloaded to the store the codes for items being sold.
