The first version of Photoshop appeared in 1988 prior to the rights being purchased by Adobe who released their first version in 1990. Early versions were all for the Macintosh computers; a Windows version followed in 1992.
Adobe Photoshop version 7 was the first version for Mac OS X and was released in 2002.
Adobe launched the first version in 1990
The first CS Photoshop (version 8) is compatible with OS X 10.4.
To move from Photoshop 7 to CS4 will require a purchased full copy of Photoshop CS4 as there is no upgrade available for versions of Photoshop older than 8 - the first CS version.
Photoshop was originally created by Thomas Knoll in 1987 on his Macintosh computer while he was a PhD student at the University of Michigan. In 1988 he showed Photoshop to both Apple and Adobe and Adobe purchased the rights to distribute the software. Photoshop 1 was released in 1990 for the Macintosh only. The first version for Windows (version 2.5) appeared in 1992. The software has been enhanced and expanded up to the current version 12. The Photoshop .PSD file format is widely used in graphic and video software as a standard format and there are numerous companies that develop plug-ins that add special effects to Photoshop.

No. You do not have to have it to upgrade to CS5. CS5 can either be an upgrade if you already own an older version but it is also a fully functional program on its own. if you do not have any versions of Photoshop you would need to buy and install CS5. Then later on if another version comes out you then can upgrade to that version for cheaper.
