The usual method to install a linux type operating system (Ubuntu, for one example) is to first download the program, burn it as an ISO onto a CD, and make the CD drive as the first boot (rather than the hard-drive) by entering the BIOS. Then, with the CD in the drive switch on the computer. You will eventually be offered the choice of running the ubuntu operating system as a live-cd, which doesn't alter any settings or your present OS, as it is run entirely in memory (RAM), or install Linux Ubuntu (either as a dual-boot or do you want it to use the whole of the hard-drive). As to why there is a disc already there? Maybe the BIOS has not been set to make the CD drive the first boot?
Different Linux distributions have different methods for installing programs, far too many to be comprehensive in a single answer. If you want a specific answer, ask "How do i install Firefox and Pidgin in Ubuntu?" or "How do I install Firefox and Pidgin in OpenSUSE?", or whatever distribution you are using.
takes care of many hardware changes. If i install Linux on PC1, and then put the disk onto PC2, Kudzu will actually note the different vireo, network, audio, etc card, ask you if it should remove the "old" software, and install the "correct" software. I move a disk from a rather old machine, to a new one. Kudzo noticed the difference, and mad the corrections. I mist admit, I was impressed, and amazed.
This is a terrible question. Installing it on what? Learn how to ask better questions!
You can learn about the Linux operating system from a number of sources. You can get books on Linux, you can read blogs, or you can ask away in forums.
When installing, it should ask you if you want to keep the old system or not. If you choose to keep the old system, should automatically set up dual boot. If the installer does not have this option than you will have to download a dual booter. Just remember when installing the second operating system to put it on a DIFFERENT partition than the first one.
