Excel is a versatile application that does lots of things. There are various mouse pointers to indicate what you are doing so that you know things like when you are correctly selecting cells or when you are copying or when you are using the fill handle or when you are widening columns. Often you need to get the mouse pointer to a precise location before you can do something, like having it over the fill handle. The mouse pointer will change to indicate to the user that they are now in the correct position and can proceed with whatever task they need to do.
