Where can you find screenshots taken on a MacBook Pro?

It is easy to save screenshots taken on a MacBook Pro on the desktop using Command + Shift + 3 or Command + Shift + 4. They are in the form of PNG files and are named as Screen Shot [date]. Another tool I use on my Mac is ScreenRec which stores captures in its history and can also display screenshots as well as recordings you have made.

macOS places screenshots in an expected location unless you instruct it to the contrary. The default settings of the camera are to save shots with a combination of keys such as Command + Shift + 3 or Command + Shift + 4 directly on your desktop with a time-stamped file name. They can be found easily with the help of Finder or minimized windows to reveal the files. When you are using the Command + Shift + 5 capture bar, you can also select a new location to save the screenshots, which will be used to save new screenshots. Applications such as ScreenRec store your images and videos on their own library where they can be readily accessed and shared and some users find it easier than searching through folders, particularly when you want to alternate between pictures and short videos.

By default screenshots are saved to the Desktop (Named Screen Shot Date time) but it is possible that the location has been changed - this is usually moved to the Pictures folder in a folder called ScreenShots or possibly in the Documents folder.

Pressing the 3 keys: Command Shift and 3 will capture the whole screen. Pressing Command Shift and 4 will give you a cross hair cursor that you can drag around the part of the screen to be captured or pressing the Space bar will change the cross hair cursor into a camera icon which will capture the window that it is over. In the Utilities folder (within the Applications folder) you will find the Grab utility that adds timed screen shots etc.

If you take a full screenshot (cmd+shift+3) or a sectional screenshot (cmd+shift+4), it shows up on the desktop. It's called "Screen shot YEAR-MONTH-DAY at HOUR.MINUTE.SECOND AM/PM.png". For example, if I take one right now, it's called "Screen shot 2012-08-16 at 12.17.54 PM.png".
