You can buy vaio computers at any store that sells Sony Computer Electronics, Such as Costco, Best Buy, or most computer and electronic stores. You could also order them from the Sony website.
Depending on the model as far as the Vaio's go, but I would give the upper edge to Sony.
You can buy them at several online stores like the Sony website, the amazon website others. You may also consider trying to find a used one at a local computer shop. If you don't find a used one there you might find one on craigslist or ebay. I don't think any of the big box stores carry them, but don't quote me on that. I could be totally wrong. If you have a Best Buy or Circuit City nearby you might want to go check there.
Go for the sony I have had HP's and they are a pain in the backside. Me too go for the Sony I recommend you get a sony vaio, I have had both laptops already and I can tell you that a sony vaio is more convenient. HP had a problem with the USB ports already and it is a common problem. Plus, sony vaio has a faster processor (depending on your model)
The best laptop is macbook pro 15-inch but its costly dear so go with sony vaio
Gaming: Look for a "Rock" Laptop Work: Sony Vaio laptops Internet/Social/Email: Id still go for a Vaio, or perhaps an "Acer"
The best thing to do would be to buy an expensive laptop, so that it lasts for a while. I would say you should buy a Sony Vaio S. They may be expensive, but they will last and are worth the money. If you need to take notes, an Asus Transformer may do the trick, being a tablet. Or, you can buy a Wacom Bamboo accessory for your Sony Vaio S.
Yes just go to best buy and ask for the cables you need
Open VAIO Central and go to the "Other" submenu and you will see LED Illumination.
