Normally numbers align to the right. However, if a cell has had another alignment specifically set for it, then the number will follow that alignment.
Excel right aligns dates within a worksheet because it treats dates as numbers.

As dates and times are numeric in nature, they are always aligned to the right in a cell by default.

It is the positioning to something in relation to its surroundings. In Word, text can be aligned to the left, centre and right. In Excel things in cells can be aligned those ways, but also to the top of a cell and the bottom of a cell.

It is the default setting for text. It aligns the text to the right side of a cell. If you use left align, the text will be aligned to the left side of the cell. If you use center align, the text will be aligned in the center of the cell.
