John "Fat Rat" Russell was a daredevil cyclist from Baton Rouge area who fell short of trying to break Evel Knievel's record by jumping 22 cars. I saw him that night on August 5th, 1972. Hot, humid evening. He fell just short of his 22 car jump at State Capital Dragway attempting to break Knievel's record. He was 23. I was almost 10. If I recall correctly, he was riding an Oosa 250. and sustained a spinal cord injury. Attached is a pic of him from local newspaper I think the night of that event. Was at a dove hunt with him in September, 2008. While I didn't pair up with him we were still able to shoot the bull and some birds. He died in 2023 at 73.
