Dell only made it look as if they were up with or ahead of others in technology with the memory card readers like the SD card reader in the TOSHIBA NB-205 Netbook and othe later model laptops, Notrbooks and netbooks.
The slot for the reade is just a hole to let dust into your laptop.
I have the 2005 Dell Latitude D610 Laptop and using it as i write this answer.
My advice is forget about the SmartCard reader drive and the credit card size cards and plug the hole up with some soft medical type bandaging that will alow air flow and filtering.
It is difficult to tell as we do not know what type of "Dell Laptop" you have. But there is a fool-proof way, unless the port isn't working, you can buy a memory-card reader and plug it in to the reletive spot.
