No live specimens of the Big-eared hopping mouse have ever been recorded by Europeans. This species is only known from two incomplete specimens collected 100 km north of Perth before 1844.

Scientists actually aren't positive if the Gould's mouse is extinct or not. The last known specimens were caught in 1856 and 1857. There haven't been any positively identified specimens of the Gould's mouse seen since that time.
