Considering computers are incredibly complex machines when you really think about it, it's amazing that they're as easy to maintain as they are. Set your computer to defragment regularly, at least once a month. This can be done in your operating system's settings and you can arrange a convenient time for the computer to defragment when you're not using it.
For physical maintenance, a great way to keep your computer healthy for a long time is to use it only with proper ventilation. Though many computers are fine to put on your lap for short periods, leaving the vents on the bottom of the machine blocked while running causes the heat inside to go up and this will shorten the computer's overall lifespan.
Finally, on a related note, clean your computer out regularly! Every few months at least, blow out excess dust with an air compressor or even a can of precompressed air if you have to. This helps keep the computer cool and prevent dust from clogging vents and possibly shorting out components. When you blow compressed air into your computer, it's a good idea to make sure the system fans are immobilized (you can do this by putting something like a toothpick against the blade so it cannot turn). If the fans are made to spin too hard and fast with a blast of compressed air it may damage them
