To delete an incorrect character in a document, simply click next to the incorrect character and then press BACKSPACE to erase to the left of the insertion point. You can also click next to the incorrect character and click DELETE to erase to the right of the insertion point.
It deletes text to the right of the cursor. If some text is selected, it will delete all of that text at once.
You might mean the "Insertion point" or it can be called the cursor and also the I-bar. This is a vertical line [ | ] the height of a capital letter that is just after (to the right of) the last character typed or just before (to the left of) a character that will be deleted with the Del key when writing a left to right language.
The button that typically moves the insertion point to the right is the "Right Arrow" key on a keyboard. In most text editing software, pressing this key will advance the cursor one character to the right. Additionally, in some applications, you may find a "Right" button within the user interface that serves the same function.

The keyboard. Whatever you type will be inserted at the insertion point, provided Word is in Insert mode (the default). If it is in Overtype mode instead, and there is already some text to the right of the insertion point, what you type will replace it, character for character. You can switch back and forth between the two modes by pressing the Insert key on the keyboard, or by double clicking OVR on the status bar.

The key used to remove the character before the intersection point in most text editing applications is the Backspace key. Pressing Backspace deletes the character immediately to the left of the cursor's current position. In some contexts, the Delete key is also used, but it removes the character to the right of the cursor.
