both are good in terms of what we call the elements of 3d namely: Modeling, Texturing, Lighting, Animation and (Rendering in addition) but the point here is if you are using compositing software like adobe after effects, chances are that you have an endless possibility to integrate this two software and the power is limitless due you can export all the the data or the whole composition in after effects by creating a composition that after effects can understand, just like what they say in after effects "the limitation in your imagination" imagine what output or the possibilities that these two softwares can do with its powerful integration, 3d max is good and you can do alot of things in there and cinema 4d as well, depending on what kind of requirements you are into on finishing your project, this is what I've figured out because when i started to study 3d I'm totally confused of whether what is the best 3d software out there so i started exploring every 3d software in the net and i found out that cinema 4d is i think the best one for me due to i always use after effects in all of my compositing, you can freely decide for youself of what you think is good for you, hope you find the right one for you guys.
