Tim Patters
QDOS was developed by Tim Paterson. Microsoft bought the source and rights from him, and developed it further to create PC-DOS, which they licensed to IBM. They later licensed it to other companies branded as "MS-DOS."
Seattle Computer Products wrote an operating system called QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System) which was later renamed 86-DOS. Microsoft purchased all rights to 86-DOS from Seattle Computer Products in July 1981 for $50,000 and developed it into PC-DOS, which they licensed to IBM, and MS-DOS which they sold themselves.
The origins of DOS can be traced back to 1973 with Gary Kildall's CP/M. Tim Paterson's QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System), loosely inspired by CP/M, evolved into 86-DOS which was bought by Microsoft for $50,000, which evolved into MS-DOS and IBM's PC DOS.
DOS and PC DOS are different. When we say DOS, it means Microsoft DOS or MS DOS whereas PC DOS is the different operating system (older than MS-DOS) developed by IBM. The term "DOS" is the acronym for Disk Operating System. This is the main control software that makes the computer start up and commence other loading functions. As stated PCDOS is in fact the same, an operation system and can refer to may of the older languages used when comouters were first developed such as Amiga DOS, Fast DOS etc.
IBM PC DOS doesn't come with a GUI, Just a black & white screen at first after that the colored screen was developed, but the first GUI product was an apple product.
This is quite complicated; Microsoft developed PC-DOS for IBM in 1981 and shortly afterwards started selling MS-DOS - which was a different product - to other companies. However, as time passed "IBM PC Compatibility" became an important selling point and in 1987 MS-DOS and PC-DOS were essentially the same product.
It was really the other way around; MS-DOS was developed to match the specifications written by IBM for the first IBM PC. The team that developed the PC was headed by Philip Don Estridge, known as Don Estridge.
DOS stands for Disk Operating System.DOS was the operating system used by IBM on the first Personal Computer (PC) - hence PC-DOS.
E - PC-DOS - was created in 1993-06.
MS-DOS was created by Microsoft, who bought the rights to 86-DOS from Seattle Computer Products in 1981 and modified it to IBM's specifications who then released it as PC-DOS 1.0. It was also released as MS-DOS to run on PCs. MS-DOS went through eight revisions and was finally discontinued in 2000.
MS-DOS short for Microsoft Disk Operating System) is an operating system commercialized by Microsoft. It was the most commonly used member of the DOS family of operating systems and was the main operating system for personal computers during the 1980s. It was preceded by M-DOS (also called MIDAS), designed and copyrighted by Microsoft in 1979. MSDOS was based on the Intel 8086 family of microprocessors, particularly the IBM PC and compatibles. It was gradually replaced on consumer desktop computers by operating systems offering a graphical user interface (GUI), in particular by various generations of the Microsoft Windows operating system. MS-DOS was known before as QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System) and 86-DOS.[
PC-DOS is the original operating system for the IBM PC. It is basically the same operating system as MS-DOS, but was distributed by IBM instead of being licensed directly from Microsoft.
