Christopher Latham Sholes invented the QWERTY keyboard in 1875 when he produced the first commercial typewriter.

The name of QWERTY derives from the first six characters on the top alphabetic line of the keyboard. the order of the keyboard consists of the letters you use most on the homerow (asdfghjkl;)

But there were other keyboards ahead of that. Piano keyboards for instance. And straight off alphabetical keyboards.

Computer key layouts evolved from typewriter key layouts.

Christopher Latham Sholes invented the "QWERTY" typewriter keyboard layout in 1873. The design was to separate successive keystrokes on the old flip-up style manual typewriters to keep the letters from binding up. So the basic design was to alternate the sides of the keyboards used for successive keystrokes. And, it turned out to be relatively efficient.

Computer keyboards evolved over many years. Early computers didn't have keyboards, but rather were programed essentially using jumper wires. Next, IBM and other large computer manufacturers created punch cards. People would use a typewriter to punch holes in cards which would tell the computer how to load its program. The stack of cards were then read into the computer and it would execute the program.

Later, a "teletype" came out which combined a keyboard and a printer as the basic computer interface. There still wasn't a CRT (TV screen) on it yet.

Eventually the teletypes were phased out and standard computer screens were incorporated on all computers as the standard interface.
