Because the manufactures found that people would buy more Ink Jet printers if they lowered the price so they then raised the price of Ink to make up for the difference in money they lost making the printer.

Someone recently estimated the cost of Ink the printer manufactures sell to us is close to $1,000,000 a barrel! The ink is almost as expensive as the printers. I bought my ink jet on sale for $50 and the ink cartridges are between $35 and $45 dollars, each.
