Why are sound card important to the computer system?

Sound card is an add on card (mostly PCI card) for a computer that has hardware to process sound/audio input and output to and from the computer. Most of the PC motherboards have generic sound chip on board also to process sound but many not give you as good quality and sound options what a good quality add on card can provide. Most common sound cards are made by Creative.

It doesn't need one. You only need one if the on-board audio chipset does not fulfil your audio requirements or the motherboard does not come with an integrated audio chipset (most do these days). If you are an audio engineer the on-board audio chipset is unlikely to meet your needs.

Without an audio chipset, your computer would not be able to produce any audio beyond primitive beeps. The audio chipset is dedicated to digital-analog/analog-digital conversions. The quality of that conversion is entirely dependent upon the quality of the chipset, in addition to the usual interconnections between the computer and the audio sources.

A sound card adds sound capabilities to a computer.

The original PCs only had rudimentary sound support. The main purpose for that little bit of sound support was to signal error codes. However, programmers were able to reprogram the channel of the interval timer that was connected to the speaker to get it to operate at different rates. It didn't sound that good, and there was only one sound channel, but music was possible.

Adding a sound card adds several abilities. They typically add an FM synthesizer to emulate a number of instruments, a D/A converter to convert digital signals into sound -- enabling the ability to play and record digitized sounds, a MIDI interface to allow MIDI instruments to be used with the computer, and a game port for joysticks and flight controllers. Plus you can hook a sound card to an external amplifier and play through good speakers.
