Even though they are much shorter than they used to be on standard typewriters, they still might be a little longer than necessary. In standard typing, the spacebar is hit only by the right thumb. But as you know if you are a touch-typist, the position of the hand changes a little as you type, and you might be approaching the spacebar from slightly different places. Spreading the bar out a little helps to make it effortless.
