Why computers use digital data?

Have you ever studied analog computers? Didn't think so.

The first system I worked on in 1978 was a military avionics unit containing 6 digital and 2 high speed hybrid (digital & analog) computers in a 6 inch square by 2 foot long box. Analog drifts and can rarely give more than 2 digit precision answers.

This is why computer technology is considered digital:

• Computers work in a concept called binary. This means they store information as either a 1 (ON) or a 0 (OFF). No matter what you type in your PC, it will be stored as a 0 or a 1.
• Even this paragraph will be stored in binary, like 11001110, etc.
• Your hard disk, USB stick and all other electronic devices use binary to store information.

• All digital devices work like this, and so computers are counted as digital devices.

Because computers - like any other electronic device, uses numbers to represent information (and a single number is a "digit", in addition that a "bit" is a "binary digit"), and those numbers are sequenced in binary, in which it corresponds to a sequence of electric pulses, very much similar to the human brain. However in contrast the human brain has much more neurons than a conventional computer has transistors in a CPU, and therefore are able to represent these pulses into something more than just numbers (and not to mention the amount and pattern of brain signals are much different and longer per chunk of information compared to data on a computer.

Digital data is a binary system. Electrical switches only have two positions, or conditions, ON or OFF. Any number can be represented using a binary system and a system of electrical switches made of transistors can represent this binary system.

Electricity can now be used to manipulate numbers just by turning switches on and off.

By using groups of digits, timed pulses and simple programs, errors in binary data can be worked out and corrected. So there is little, or no, loss of data. An analogue computer would be more susceptible to interference and noise, with its infinite values.

So Digital binary data is the best way to use electricity and switches, to make a computer.

A computer only knows that all data is composed entirely of ones and zeroes - known as binary. Whereas, we use ABC and 123.
