Besides the technology becoming dated and therefore slower than when compared to newer models, there are a number of factors:

Excess of old and redundant software. Every time the computer boots it loads small fragments of these old programs which are not necessarily used.

The disk drive becomes fragmented, meaning that data for a single program or file can be stored over many physical locations on the drive. This means the read/ seek time when accessing the file is slower as it has to physically load from a number of disk locations.

Easiest way to speed up an old computer is:

1. Uninstall all old programs that are no longer needed on the computer.

2. Empty the recycle bin, delete all old temporary or cache files (ie. Explorer cache files).

3. Use a program such as Piriform CCleaner to find and delete all old registry entries from the file registry; you can use the same program to delete old temporary and cache files.

4. Use a disk de-fragmenter program to consolidate physical files on the drive so that the access speed is increased.

ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE RESORTING TO SOMETHING LIKE THIS, DO NOT DISTURB THE PROGRAMS ONCE THEY START CLEANING UP YOUR PC, THIS CAN CAUSE FILE CORRUPTION.
