Most applications written for XP will work perfectly fine on Windows Vista. The ones that don't usually either rely on an obsolete library, or require administrative privileges to run, which Vista no longer grants by default.

I don't think that's a true statement. Lots of software runs under Windows 7. Basically, anything that runs under Windows Vista will run under 7 and anything that has an issue may be able to be run in Compatibility Mode. Give it a try.
