Why does a lap top screen get dark?

LCD is run by the video card. Also, it will be dimmer if running on battery versus off of your adapter...energy saving technique. One thing you can try is find the Fn key, and then another key with a sun on it. The ones with the sun is on my arrow keys since that is the button you push, along with the Fn key, to make your screen brighter or darker. Someone may have pressed those keys without knowing it. If those things do not make a difference then you will probably need to be getting a new video card soon.

If you've been away from your laptop too long it can start to get darker and darker, but the most common reason why is because if it's unplugged, so if your laptop gets darker while you're using it check if it's plugged in or not.

My laptop screen fades when i use it with the power source coming from the mains and is much brighter when running from the battery. I had the same problem It might be because of the settings or most likely like in my case the laptop screen back light broke only solution to that is check the settings or get a new screen. ---- Mine has done the same, after I cleaned the screen. I think now that I perhaps wiped it a bit hard. Try compensationg by adjusting the light settings and see if that helps improve the quality of the screen.

The fading of the video in a laptop is not related to the video card. Instead, this can be related to a number of things. The backlight could be failing, the inverter board may be on its way out, or the cable attaching the assembly to the motherboard could be loose or going bad. Unlike our larger desktop LCD monitors, most laptop LCD panels are still lit with Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lights (CCFLs) and these do fail after a certain amount of time. Dissimilar to their bigger four-foot long cousins that are common in offices around the world, these tend to fade rather than flicker and eventually just refuse to turn back on. If this is the case, then you might find someone who will replace the backlight for you as the part is inexpensive (but the labor can be a bit costly) but most often, you will end up replacing the LCD panel. A way to test whether it is the backlight that has gone out is to try to shine a light in from the edge where the backlight is mounted and see whether you can then view anything on the screen. (Of course, the computer has to be turned on to try this.)

If the problem is the inverter board, then that is something that is inexpensive in both parts and labor as it is easy to fix and not a complicated part. When this goes out, it quits delivering the current to energize the LCD panel and, thus, you will see nothing on the screen whether in its regular state or by trying the flashlight test that I mentioned above.

In the case of the cable, to check whether it is loose requires disassembly of the top of the main part of the laptop as the cable is generally wrapped around the right screen hinge and connects to the back of the motherboard around the same area. Sometimes it just works itself loose from the motherboard due to all the jostling of moving the laptop around from place to place. If this is the problem, then reseating the cable will be the order of the day. if that is not the case and the cable itself is bad, then this could necessitate either a new cable or a new LCD panel assembly, depending on how the system is put together.

Before all this, though, check to see whether the brightness adjustments on your laptop can take care of your issue. If not, then get your laptop to a professional repair shop for analysis and diagnosis. Do not try to do these procedures yourself as you could do more harm than good due to all the sensitive parts and very small and weak wires that are within laptops.
