In the old days, computers had floppy drives. They usually had two, so you could put a program disk in drive A, and a data disk in drive B.

Later computers kept two drives so they could support both formats: 5 1/4 inch, and 3 1/2 inches. By this time, hard drives were universal, and almost always installed as the C drive.
