how do you obtain network id from ip address
Your PS3's IP address is either assigned by your router, if you're using one. It will appear as 192.168.0.xxx Or it is assigned by your modem if you are not using a router. Your IP address could constantly change, if it is not static, unlike your PS3's MAC address, which is always the same. An Internet Protocol (IP) address is an identification number that is assigned to every device that is connected to the Internet. Each IP address is unique; it consists of four sets of numbers that are separated by three dots. Your PlayStation 3 console will have an IP address if it is connected to the Internet. Your PlayStation 3's IP address can be found by accessing the console's "Settings" menu.
The IP address is obtained automatically using the DHCP protocol
Decipher the IP address means, obtain IP address using Hardware address, and basically we use RARP(Reverse address resolution protocol) to find out the IP address from hardware address.

One - and it doesn't necessarily have to be a public IP address. Then you share this single IP address over the entire network, with NAT.
you need to go into your network window and get the ip address, click the link and you should see the box you need to open then click details and setup the connection manually on your ps3 with the details from that window http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9481/37735625.jpg
Automatic Private IP Address was basically made so that clients which could not get an IP address automatically from a DHCP server could configure its own Private IP address until it can obtain address from the DHCP server which will override the APIPA and become the new IP address.
I believe it requires Port Forwarding techniques. If you have access to your router, all you need to do is forward port 5730 (default) to your PS3, in my case it was 192.168.2.13. In order to find out your PS3's IP Address, you can go into your PS3 in Settings > Network Settings > Settings and Connection Status List and use the IP Address listed right beside IP Address. Hope this helps! -Crocodila Kiss I found that after doing all the port forwards, dmz, opening NAT and everything else I read on the internet, that all it took was opening my dsl modem by typing it's IP into my browser. I found a setting that defaulted to keep IP private. Changed that to IP public and was able to host. Didn't change anything else on the ps3 or my router. Good Luck.
The System is connected on the network but it is not able to obtain the IP from the DHCP server and assigned a tempory Ip to work with by the system itself. IT uses APIPA logic
Reverse Address Resolution Protocol, obsoleted by BootP and DHCP, allows a computer to obtain an IP address after it has obtained an ethernet address. Bootstrap Protocol allows a computer to obtain an IP address when the operating system is starting up.
Reverse ARP is used to Obtain IP address from a Server(responsible for IP addresses allocation) by providing its layer 2 (MAC) address.
