Over a period of time as some programs are downloaded and others are deleted; your hard drive becomes fragmented with "loose ends" of old programs and when new programs are added, your CPU will stuff parts of the new program into various spaces all over your hard drive. This has the effect of making your CPU work harder when said program is called up. Thus, slowing down the overall performance of your computer. By doing a disk cleanup (defragging), your computer can delete these loose ends and re-position your programs together on your hard drive so that the CPU doesn't have to search all over the disk for a particular program when it is called up.

disk maintenance is jst like a disk clean up
clean the disk
Just clean it the way you would any other disk. Use some warm water (WITHOUT CLEANSERS, AS SOME CLEANING AGENTS DAMAGE THE DISK), put it on a clean rag, and wipe in a circular pattern.
In the lighthouse, on the left side of the stage, there is a cleaning spray and a napkin. Clean the disk using it.
