The purpose of refreshing your desktop is to redraw or reorder your icons if a change has been made. Refreshing the desktop does NOT dump or free ram and it does NOT speed up the performance of your computer at all.
Example: If I delete a program, lets say an antivirus or such, and it deletes all of the files and folders that go with it, but it doesn't ( for some odd reason ) delete the icon on the desktop, if you right click and hit "refresh" it will remove the icon from your desktop.
Re-booting your computer will refresh everything without shutting it down completely.
You can refresh the computer icons by pressing F5 in the key bored
right click your desktop and click refresh
