Will the Kindle Fire work in foreign countries?

The Kindle's wireless connection didn't work internationally until mid 2009. Since this device still does not have a Wi-Fi connection, until 2009 you could only download the Kindle book onto the desktop and drag it over via the USB cable and that was, in essence, the international solution. You could download something new onto your Kindle wherever Sprint worked. If you were travelling elsewhere, however, your Kindle would work just fine. You could read anything that had already been downloaded. You just couldn't link to the network to purchase something new.

In 2009, a new version of Kindle 2 with global wireless coverage was released. It utilizes GMS technology and provides wireless connectivity in over 100 countries. Kindle DX, however, still only provides 3G coverage in the US.

In 2010, Kindle 3 was introduced with 3G connectivity, essentially the same as the Kindle DX. However despite Amazon headline claim of " free global 3G" there are major limitations to this benefit when travelling abroad from the US. See travelling abroad resource below.

You cannot download new ebooks into the Kindle wirelessly from countries where Amazon has not set up the infrastructure (as of July, 2009, only the U.S. and possibly Canada), but you can use the Kindle to read books anywhere. You can also always download books to your computer and then transfer them into the Kindle via the USB port.

It depends on the kind of Kindle you have and where it's registered. If you're from the US and are traveling abroad, the best idea is probably to use the USB cable to avoid any extra fees, even if your Kindle is the kind that works globally.

If it's the global Kindle (2nd or 3rd generation) and you bought it for an outside-the-US address, they will send the books via Whispernet for "free" (but the total price of the book is sometimes 2-3 USD higher, so presumably that's to cover Whispernet delivery).

I haven't tried mine in Europe yet, but I understand that it works for everything except you can not download or stream movies because of Amazon's licenses. If you download the movies before you leave the US, then you can watch them anywhere. If you want to purchase apps or mp3s you must have a US address on the credit card they have on file.
