Several ways. If you have a new OS, and you are going to install it, you just format the drive with the new OS.
There are also wiping tools that run in DOS which you can erase the HD.
There is a great disk and its free called ultimate boot cd, it has a number of tools.
Whenever you install a new OS( operating system) it is better to wipe the drive, before you use windows format. Anything windows makes is garbage and does a terrible job.
