This is most often caused by not having proper video codecs installed. A codec is basically a set of instructions that Windows Media Player would need to properly decode the video stream. When Windows cannot find the proper codecs it attempts to decode as much of the file as possible which is why you are more than likely getting audio but no video. Two of the more common video codecs for AVI files are DivX and XviD.
